Most people don’t spend much time thinking about what’s happening in their roof space until they hear it.

From a rodent’s point of view, a roof void is almost the perfect home.
It’s dry, protected from predators and largely undisturbed. Roof insulation provides warmth, timber framing offers plenty of places to hide and there’s often easy access through broken roof tiles, gaps around plumbing, vents or even overhanging tree branches.
Once inside, rats and mice will gather insulation, paper, leaves and other soft materials to build nests. If food is available nearby, whether that’s pet food in the garage, fruit trees in the backyard or crumbs in the pantry, there’s very little reason for them to move on.
The problem is that roof spaces also contain electrical wiring, ducting and insulation, all of which can be damaged as rodents chew to keep their teeth worn down or create nesting areas.
The Longer They Stay, The Bigger the Problem Can Become
One or two noises in the ceiling might not seem like much, but rodents reproduce surprisingly quickly.
A small problem can become a much larger one over the course of a winter if it’s left untreated. As populations grow, so does the amount of damage they can cause. We’ve seen roof insulation pulled apart for nesting, wiring chewed through and unpleasant odours develop as nesting material and droppings accumulate in roof spaces.
It’s also worth remembering that rodents don’t spend all of their time in the roof. Once they’re established, they’ll often move through wall cavities and into kitchens, pantries, laundries and garages in search of food and water, particularly after dark.
The sooner rodent activity is addressed, the easier it usually is to bring it under control.

A common misconception is that rodent control simply involves placing a few bait blocks in the roof and waiting for the problem to disappear. Effective rodent management is usually much more comprehensive than that.
The first step is understanding how rodents are getting into the property in the first place. Without identifying entry points, new rodents can continue finding their way inside even after the existing population has been reduced.

With new Australian regulations coming into effect from March 2026, there are also stricter requirements around how some rodenticides can be used, particularly outdoors, with greater emphasis on secure bait stations and environmentally responsible treatment methods.
